Overview

Appalachia Radio is the principal broadcast of post-war West Virginia, heard across Appalachia in the years after the Great War and given new life when the young DJ Julie takes over its operation in 2103. It is a station with deep pre-War roots that becomes a symbol of the region's reclamation.

History & Background

The station was on the air before the Great War, as evidenced by radios found in pre-War locations, but its history between 2077 and 2102 is largely unknown. When the Vault 76 dwellers emerged on Reclamation Day in 2102, the station was automated, playing music without commentary. Following the abatement of the Scorched plague and the return of Wastelanders, Julie, a 23-year-old woman who grew up listening to the station with her parents and brother Matty, took over as its first human DJ.

Content & Format

Appalachia Radio plays a folksy mix of pre-War Americana, bluegrass, and period pop, with Julie's warm, conversational interludes providing news, encouragement, and reflections on Appalachian life. The station's playlist and Julie's commentary shift with the game's seasonal updates, adding new music and themed content over time. Its broadcast location is never shown, adding a layer of mystery to the region's most reliable companion.

Wasteland Significance

Appalachia Radio gives the scattered residents of West Virginia a shared sense of home, tying together the region's disparate communities and settlement efforts. Julie's takeover of the station marks a turning point in Appalachia's recovery, symbolizing the return of human voices to a land long dominated by machines and monsters. The station is central to the game's evolving narrative as the region rebuilds.

Notable Appearances

Appalachia Radio appears throughout Fallout 76, and Julie's story is expanded through holotapes, random encounters, and seasonal content. The station's evolution from automated jukebox to human-led broadcast is chronicled across the game's updates, and Julie is a beloved figure in the game's community.
