Overview
Cannibal is a grim perk that allows the player character to consume the flesh of human corpses to restore health, trading morality for survival. It is one of the darkest and most mechanically distinctive perks in the Fallout series.
History & Background
The perk appeared in Fallout 3, where eating corpses was treated as a morally reprehensible act with a karma penalty, and returned in Fallout: New Vegas and Fallout 4. Each game framed cannibalism differently, from an evil act in the karma-based systems of the earlier titles to a morally neutral survival choice in Fallout 4. The perk's flavor text varies from clinical to darkly humorous, but its function has remained constant.
Content & Format
With the Cannibal perk, the player can activate a special action on human corpses to consume them, restoring a significant amount of health. In Fallout 3, each act of consumption incurred negative karma and, if witnessed, a negative reputation; New Vegas added a reputation hit with companions and factions. Fallout 4 simplified the perk, with higher ranks reducing the detection penalty for feeding in public.
Wasteland Significance
Cannibal offers a powerful survival tool for players who embrace the wasteland's harshest logic, effectively turning enemies into rations. It interacts strongly with role-playing, allowing characters to embody everything from desperate survivors to monstrous predators. The perk's moral weight makes it a defining choice for evil or pragmatist playthroughs.
Notable Appearances
Cannibal appears in Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, and Fallout 4, and is referenced in Fallout 76 through related flavor content. Its use in Fallout: New Vegas famously affects companion approval, with characters like Boone reacting with horror to witnessed cannibalism.
