The Battle for the Commonwealth
Events & Timeline · Source: Fallout 4 (2015), main quest finale
Overview
The Battle for the Commonwealth was the 2287 climax of the conflict over the Institute's future, in which the Sole Survivor — allied with the Minutemen, the Brotherhood of Steel, or the Railroad — destroyed the Institute's underground facility and ended its two-century shadow rule over the region.
History & Background
The Institute, founded by the survivors of the Commonwealth Institute of Technology, spent over two centuries abducting surface dwellers and building synthetic humans, replacing people in communities across the Commonwealth. Its secrecy and cruelty bred three rival powers: the Brotherhood of Steel's expedition under Elder Maxson, the synth-liberating Railroad, and the Minutemen's grassroots militia. The Sole Survivor's arrival in 2287 — pursued by the Institute that had killed their spouse and taken their child — lit the fuse.
Details & Timeline
2287: the Sole Survivor escapes Vault 111 and hunts for Shaun, learning the Institute's secrets through Diamond City, Goodneighbor, and the memory den. October 2287: the Battle of Bunker Hill, where the factions clash over escaped synths. Late 2287: the chosen faction launches its final strike — the Nuclear Option — breaching the Institute and detonating its reactor, destroying the facility and its inhabitants.
Wasteland Significance
The Institute's destruction ended the Commonwealth's greatest threat and the synth trade's source, but the victory's meaning depended on who won: the Minutemen rebuilt the settlements, the Brotherhood imposed martial order, and the Railroad freed the synths. The Commonwealth's future was rewritten in a single night.
