The Battle of Hoover Dam
Events & Timeline · Source: Fallout: New Vegas
The Battle of Hoover Dam, often referred to as the First Battle of Hoover Dam, was a pivotal military engagement in 2277 between the New California Republic (NCR) and Caesar's Legion in the Mojave Wasteland. The Hoover Dam was a crucial strategic asset, providing water and electricity to the NCR's expanding territories and serving as a defensive stronghold. Caesar's Legion, led by the Malpais Legate (Joshua Graham), sought to seize the dam as a symbolic "Rubicon" to solidify their control over the Mojave and push the NCR out of the region. The Legion's advance was preceded by sabotage campaigns and raids into NCR territory, further weakening the Republic's already stretched forces.
The Legion launched a direct assault on the dam, initially forcing NCR forces under General Oliver to fall back to the middle of the structure. However, the NCR, under the command of Chief Hanlon, executed a cunning tactical retreat. NCR Ranger snipers and First Recon sharpshooters were strategically positioned on a nearby ridge to target Legion veterans and officers, sowing chaos among the less experienced Legionaries. The NCR then lured a significant portion of the Legion's elite forces into Boulder City, which had been rigged with explosives. The subsequent detonation decimated the trapped Legionaries, effectively breaking their main assault.
The NCR secured a costly victory, suffering over 100 casualties, though Legion losses were significantly higher. In the aftermath, Caesar, viewing Malpais Legate's defeat as an unforgivable failure, had Joshua Graham covered in pitch, set on fire, and thrown into the Grand Canyon, leading to his transformation into the Burned Man. This battle established the Hoover Dam as the central point of conflict in the Mojave and set the stage for the events of Fallout: New Vegas, culminating in the Second Battle of Hoover Dam years later.
