Mole rats are mutated rodents descended from the common naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) that have proliferated across the post-war continental United States. Exposure to radiation and the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV) in some regions has transformed these formerly small, nearly blind subterranean mammals into aggressive, dog-sized predators with prominent incisors capable of tearing through flesh and bone with frightening efficiency.
Mole rats are primarily subterranean, emerging from burrows to attack surface-dwelling prey. Their characteristic behavior involves bursting from the ground directly beneath or adjacent to a target, using their powerful forelimbs and teeth to attack. This makes them particularly dangerous in open terrain where their approach may be invisible until the moment of attack. Their nearly hairless bodies, pink-gray coloration, and prominent yellow-orange incisors are distinctive and widely recognized throughout wasteland communities.
Mole rat meat is edible and relatively abundant, making it a staple food source for many wasteland settlements and travelers, though it is rarely described as appetizing. Mole rat hides can be tanned for rudimentary leather goods. Various subspecies exist, including the Snuffles mole rat, the vicious Mole Rat Brood Mother (capable of birthing young rapidly in combat), and FEV-exposed variants that display enhanced size and aggression.
Despite their individual weakness, mole rats pose a significant threat through sheer numbers and persistence, often wearing down even well-equipped travelers through attrition. Their rapid breeding cycle and adaptability have made them one of the most successful post-war species in terms of population and range.
