The Khans (Great Khans)
Factions & Armies · Source: Fallout: New Vegas (2010); Fallout (1997) for their origin as the New California Khans
Overview
The Khans — also called the Great Khans — are a proud raider nation in the Mojave, descended from the New California Khans of 2161, who rebuilt their strength at Red Rock Canyon after the NCR massacred them at Bitter Springs.
History & Background
The original Khans were a raider gang of the early wasteland, wiped out by the Vault Dweller in 2161 after they raided Vault 13. The survivors scattered and wandered for generations, eventually resettling in the Mojave. Under Papa Khan's leadership they rebuilt into the largest raider tribe in the region, living by a warrior code of strength, honor, and vengeance.
Details & Timeline
2161: the New California Khans are destroyed by the Vault Dweller. Decades of wandering follow. 2275: the NCR attacks the Khans at Bitter Springs, killing hundreds of non-combatants in an atrocity the NCR tried to bury. 2281: the Khans are courted by Caesar's Legion, which wants their warriors for the assault on Hoover Dam, while the NCR seeks to avoid another war. The Courier can steer them into the Legion, into an uneasy NCR peace, or onto a new path — even helping them leave the Mojave to found a true nation elsewhere.
Wasteland Significance
The Khans are the Mojave's largest fighting force outside the two great powers, and their loyalty can tip the Second Battle of Hoover Dam. Their story is also the wasteland's most enduring lesson in how empires treat those they consider lesser — and how the dispossessed survive.
