Mirelurk
Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Fallout 76
Mirelurks are among the most distinctive and widely distributed mutated creatures of the post-war American coastline and waterways. Descended from pre-war blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) and possibly other crustacean species, mirelurks have undergone massive hypertrophy, with adult specimens reaching carapace widths of three to four feet and leg spans exceeding six feet. Their name derives from the 'mire' (marsh, swamp) habitats they favor and the 'lurking' behavior they exhibit.
A mirelurk's exoskeleton has been transformed by mutation into natural armor comparable to military-grade combat plating — these creatures can absorb sustained small-arms fire to their carapace with minimal effect, making headshots or attacks to the softer underbelly the preferred tactical approach. Their primary offensive capabilities are their oversized claws, capable of exerting hundreds of pounds of crushing pressure, and in some variants, their facial structures which have adapted for charging attacks.
Mirelurk meat — particularly from the softer-shelled juvenile stage known as Softshell Mirelurk — is considered a delicacy across the wasteland, finding its way into dishes from Capital Wasteland wasteland omelets to Commonwealth mirelurk cakes. Mirelurk eggs are also edible and highly nutritious, if difficult to harvest given the defensive aggression of the colony. Mirelurks are found along coastlines, in swampland, and in flooded urban ruins from the Capital Wasteland to the Commonwealth, with the largest colonies centered around persistent water sources. The Mirelurk Queen, an enormous egg-laying matriarch, represents one of the most dangerous single-creature encounters in the wasteland.
