Nightkin Schizophrenia (Stealth Boy Psychosis)

Mutations & FEV · Source: Fallout: New Vegas in-game lore and Jacobstown terminal entries

Overview

Nightkin are super mutants who overuse Stealth Boys, and their constant exposure leads to severe schizophrenia and psychosis. The condition manifests as hallucinated voices, paranoia, and violent mood swings. It defines nightkin society, from the Master's elite to the outcasts of the Mojave.

Origin & Mechanism

Stealth Boy technology works by bending light around the user, and prolonged use appears to damage the already-strained minds of FEV-mutated super mutants. The stealth fields' effects on mutant neurology cause persistent auditory hallucinations and identity fragmentation. Nightkin in Fallout: New Vegas, such as those at Jacobstown, exhibit classic symptoms.

Effects & Symptoms

Affected nightkin hear voices that command and taunt them, often believing themselves to be someone else, such as their pre-mutation selves. They suffer paranoia, memory loss, and unpredictable aggression. Some develop elaborate delusions, like Antler's belief in a human identity.

Wasteland Significance

The condition drove nightkin away from mainstream super mutant society, creating bands of unstable recluses. Jacobstown's efforts to treat them, including attempts to wean them off Stealth Boys, highlight the tragedy of the condition. Nightkin remain dangerous wildcards in the wastes.

Notable Appearances

Nightkin appear in Fallout (the Master's elite), Fallout 2, and prominently in Fallout: New Vegas (Jacobstown and the Mojave). Notable nightkin like Davison and Dog/God illustrate the condition's extremes.
