Flatwoods Monster

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 76

The Flatwoods Monster is one of Appalachia's most enigmatic post-war entities, named after the 1952 'Braxton County Monster' incident near Flatwoods, West Virginia, where multiple witnesses reported encountering a hovering, glowing entity with a spade-shaped head. In the post-war wasteland, the Flatwoods Monster has become something more than a campfire story.

The creature encountered in the Appalachian wastes matches many aspects of the 1952 description: a floating or hovering figure with a bulbous, spade-shaped head encased in what appears to be some form of environmental suit or exoskeleton, glowing with an unearthly purple-pink luminescence. The creature moves without visible means of locomotion, hovering silently above the ground, and demonstrates technological capabilities — teleportation, energy-based attacks, and mind-control abilities — far beyond any known wasteland mutation.

Evidence strongly suggests the Flatwoods Monster is not a mutated terrestrial creature but an extraterrestrial entity — specifically, a Zetan alien in a specialized environmental or combat suit. The technology it displays is consistent with other documented Zetan encounters, and the creature's behavior (observation, abduction, technological interaction) aligns with known alien activity patterns. Why this particular Zetan operates in Appalachia and what its objectives are remain unknown.

Encounters with the Flatwoods Monster are rare and typically brief. The creature appears to prioritize observation over engagement, but when provoked, it demonstrates alarming combat capabilities including telekinetic manipulation and energy projection. Some Appalachian survivors report the creature has demonstrated curiosity rather than hostility, suggesting a reconnaissance or research mission rather than invasion.
