Mega Sloth

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 76

Mega sloths are massive mutated descendants of the common three-toed sloth (Bradypus species), transformed by radiation and possibly FEV into slow-moving but immensely powerful creatures of the Appalachian wasteland. Despite their lethargic movement, these animals can reach heights of twelve to fifteen feet when standing upright on their hind legs and weigh several tons.

A mega sloth's primary threat comes from its massive hooked claws — originally evolved for arboreal locomotion and now repurposed as devastating melee weapons. A single swipe can disembowel an unarmored human or crush Power Armor plating. Their thick, shaggy hide, matted with moss, fungus, and accumulated debris, provides substantial ballistic resistance. Mega sloths are generally solitary and not naturally aggressive toward humans unless provoked or during mating season, but their sheer territorial volume makes accidental encounters dangerous.

Mega sloth meat is exceptionally rich and fatty, considered a delicacy by Appalchian settlers despite the significant danger involved in hunting one. Their hide yields premium leather, and their claws — when properly treated — can be fashioned into rare melee weapons of significant cultural value to certain tribal groups. The fungal and moss growths on a mega sloth's hide are sometimes harvested by Appalachian herbalists for their medicinal properties, having absorbed unique compounds from the sloth's biology.
