Spore Carrier Infection Cycle

Mutations & FEV · Source: Fallout 76 in-game lore and Vault 94 terminal entries

Overview

Spore Carriers are humans infected by a virulent fungal spore that overtakes their bodies and minds. The infection is endemic to The Mire in Appalachia. The infected spread the spores further, perpetuating the cycle.

Origin & Mechanism

The infection originates from mutated fungi in The Mire, whose spores are released into the air and water. Inhalation or contact allows the fungus to take root, spreading through the host's body. The infection was deliberately studied, including in Vault 94, where dwellers were exposed as part of a pre-war experiment.

Effects & Symptoms

Infected humans develop gray, cracked skin and fungal growths as their bodies are consumed. Their minds degrade, leaving them driven by the infection's need to spread spores. They remain partially aware, making the condition especially tragic.

Wasteland Significance

Spore Carriers made The Mire one of Appalachia's most dangerous regions, and Vault 94's experiment became a cautionary tale. Understanding the infection's cycle was key to avoiding it. The fungus represents nature's own mutation in a world of man-made horrors.

Notable Appearances

Spore Carriers appear in Fallout 76 in The Mire and Vault 94. The infection cycle is also relevant to the region's settler communities.
