The Pitt Uprising

Events & Timeline · Source: Fallout 3: The Pitt DLC (2009)

Overview

The Pitt Uprising was the 2277 slave rebellion in the ruined steel city of Pittsburgh, where the enslaved workers of the Pitt rose against their master, Ashur, in a desperate bid for freedom — a revolt whose outcome the Lone Wanderer decided.

History & Background

Pittsburgh's post-war steel mills drew raiders and slavers who organized the city's industry, with the self-styled Baron Ashur — a former Brotherhood of Steel paladin — seizing control. Under Ashur's rule, slaves worked the toxic mills, where prolonged exposure to the region's poisons twisted people into feral 'trogs'. The steel produced was sold across the region, making the Pitt rich and its slaves expendable.

Details & Timeline

2277: the Lone Wanderer travels to the Pitt, drawn by Wernher, a slave who claims to know the way to a cure for the mutations. The Wanderer works both sides — winning Ashur's trust and locating the steel ingots needed to open the bridge — while Wernher's rebellion prepares below. In the mill's depths, the uprising ignites: the Wanderer must choose to back Wernher's bloody revolt or defend Ashur's brutal but functional order.

Wasteland Significance

The uprising's outcome decided the fate of thousands of slaves and the region's steel supply. A successful revolt ended the Pitt's slave economy and freed its workers, while Ashur's survival preserved the mills — and the trog plague — for another generation. The choice became one of the Capital Wasteland's most debated moral questions.
