Tunnelers (Genetic Origin Theories)

Mutations & FEV · Source: Fallout: New Vegas Lonesome Road DLC in-game lore and Ulysses' dialogue

Overview

Tunnelers are pale, fast, burrowing creatures native to the Divide, the storm-wracked region of the Mojave. They are a new, rapidly spreading species that threatens the entire wasteland. Their origins are the subject of speculation and dread.

Origin & Mechanism

The Tunnelers' exact origin is unknown; Ulysses theorizes they evolved in the subterranean darkness of the Divide, shaped by the region's radiation and the unique conditions of the old highways and bunkers. Some theories suggest a mutated offshoot of human or animal stock, while others point to entirely new evolution. They emerged in force after the war, adapted to dark, enclosed spaces.

Effects & Symptoms

Tunnelers are blind or light-sensitive, pale-skinned, and extremely fast and aggressive. They attack in swarms, burrowing through rubble and overwhelming prey. They are territorial, and their presence drives other creatures from the Divide.

Wasteland Significance

Ulysses warns that Tunnelers will eventually spread beyond the Divide, potentially overrunning the Mojave and beyond. Their adaptability makes them a long-term threat unlike any other creature. They represent the wasteland's capacity to create new horrors.

Notable Appearances

Tunnelers appear in Fallout: New Vegas's Lonesome Road DLC. They also feature in the Divide's lore of old-world highways and pre-war bunkers.
