Spore Plant
Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout: New Vegas
Spore plants are semi-mobile, carnivorous botanical organisms found primarily in the Mojave Wasteland, with related species documented in other regions. Unlike most mutated flora that are passively dangerous (poisonous, radioactive, or structurally hazardous), spore plants are actively predatory — capable of detecting, tracking, and attacking animal life, including humans.
A spore plant resembles an overgrown, tumorous pitcher plant or Venus flytrap, with a bulbous base containing digestive organs, surrounded by thick, fleshy leaves and topped with a maw-like opening lined with thorn-like structures. The plant is rooted but capable of limited locomotion through root-crawling — a slow, unsettling movement that allows it to reposition within its territory. Its primary attack involves lunging its 'head' forward to bite, accompanied by spitting caustic digestive enzymes at range.
Spore plants are most commonly found in damp, dark environments — caves, underground facilities, and the heavily vegetated areas around water sources. They are particularly dense in and around Vault 22, where the same biological experimentation that produced the spore carrier fungus may have contributed to their aggressive mutation. Some wasteland botanists theorize that spore plants and the Vault 22 fungus may share a common origin or have hybridized at some point. Spore plant pods contain a concentrated digestive enzyme that has alchemical applications, and the plant's fibrous material can be used in poison crafting.
The 'Spore Plant Queen' variant — a larger, more aggressive specimen with enhanced spitting and melee capability — suggests a reproductive hierarchy within spore plant populations, with queens serving as brood mothers for smaller plants.
