Giant Mantis
Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 3, Fallout 4
Giant mantises are mutated descendants of praying mantises, transformed by radiation into human-sized predatory insects. Standing four to six feet tall in their characteristic upright posture, giant mantises retain the distinctive morphology of their pre-war ancestors: elongated thoraxes, triangular heads with compound eyes capable of nearly 360-degree vision, and — most importantly — raptorial forelegs lined with serrated spines for grasping and immobilizing prey.
These creatures are ambush predators, relying on their natural camouflage — typically a chitinous green or brown coloration that blends well with the overgrown ruins of the post-war landscape — to wait motionless before striking with blinding speed. Their mandibles can deliver deep, tearing bites, while their foreleg spines can pierce light armor. Giant mantises are typically solitary hunters, though mating pairs and small groups have been documented.
Giant mantis forelegs are sometimes harvested by wastelanders as components for improvised melee weapons, their natural serrations providing effective cutting edges. Mantis eggs, when cooked, are considered a delicacy by some wasteland communities, particularly in the Mojave region. Giant mantises are most common in the Mojave Wasteland, the Capital Wasteland, and the Commonwealth, preferring warm, vegetated environments where their natural camouflage is most effective.
