Bloodworm
Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 4: Nuka-World
Bloodworms are mutated parasitic annelids endemic to the arid regions of the Mojave Wasteland, particularly prevalent in the Nuka-World area and the surrounding desert. Descended from pre-war bloodworms (likely Glycera species or related marine polychaetes), these creatures adapted to terrestrial existence following the Great War, undergoing significant size increase and behavioral modification.
An adult bloodworm can reach lengths of two to four feet, with a segmented body covered in bristle-like setae that provide traction for their unique method of locomotion: they 'swim' through loose sand, soil, and debris, emerging from below to attack prey. Their most distinctive feature is their proboscis — a muscular, jawed feeding tube that can extend several inches from the mouth, lined with four hollow, venom-injecting fangs. The venom is a paralytic-hemotoxic cocktail that immobilizes prey while internal digestion begins.
Bloodworms are ambush predators that detect prey through ground vibrations. They erupt from beneath the surface when a target enters range, latching on and injecting venom while the segmented body wraps around the victim to restrict movement. Their sandy coloration makes them difficult to spot in their native terrain. Bloodworm venom glands can be harvested and processed into paralytic poisons for weapon coating, and their meat — while unappealing in appearance — is technically edible once the venom glands are carefully removed.
Bloodworms are distinct from the similarly-named bloodbug (an insect) and should not be confused. Their populations are concentrated around Nuka-World and the surrounding desert, though they may have spread to other arid regions through the caravan trade routes that pass through the area.
