Radroach

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout series

Radroaches are among the most common and recognizable mutated creatures of the post-apocalyptic wasteland, descended from the common American cockroach (Periplaneta americana). Following the Great War of 2077, these insects absorbed massive doses of radiation and underwent rapid, grotesque gigantism, growing to the size of a small dog or house cat. Their chitinous exoskeletons hardened and darkened, providing modest natural armor against small-caliber firearms and melee weapons.

Radroaches are attracted to decaying organic matter, refuse, and dark, enclosed spaces, making them ubiquitous in urban ruins, underground tunnels, and abandoned buildings across the former United States. Though individually weak, they often congregate in nests of five to twenty individuals. When threatened, radroaches will aggressively charge at perceived threats, using their mandibles and antennae to attack.

Despite their threat to unarmed wastelanders, radroach meat is a surprisingly viable, if unappetizing, food source. When cooked properly, radroach meat can sustain travelers in lean times, though many find the psychological barrier of consuming mutated vermin insurmountable. Radroaches serve as an early-game benchmark for wasteland survival: if you cannot handle a radroach, the wastes will consume you.
