Rad-rat

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 3, Fallout 4

Rad-rats are mutated rodents found primarily in the Capitol Wasteland and the Commonwealth regions, representing a smaller but still dangerous offshoot of post-war rodent mutation. Unlike the larger mole rat, rad-rats are closer in size to a medium dog (approximately two to three feet in body length, excluding tail), with bristly fur, prominent yellow-orange incisors, and hairless, scaly tails that contrast with their otherwise furry bodies.

Rad-rats are aggressive scavengers and opportunistic predators, attacking anything that appears vulnerable or that enters their territory. They are typically encountered in small packs of three to six individuals, and while individually manageable, their coordinated attacks — often targeting the legs and lower body to bring prey down before swarming — make them dangerous in numbers. Their teeth, hardened by mutation and constant gnawing on irradiated materials, can puncture light armor.

Rad-rat meat is considered one of the lowest-quality protein sources in the wasteland, described as greasy, foul-tasting, and carrying a persistent irradiated taint even after cooking. Nevertheless, in the most desperate conditions, it has sustained wastelanders who had no other options. Rad-rat populations explode in urban ruins with abundant shelter and organic debris, and they are particularly common in the subways, sewers, and collapsed buildings of major pre-war cities.

The distinction between rad-rats and the smaller, non-hostile irradiated rats found across the wasteland is one of size and aggression — 'rad-rat' typically refers to the larger, pack-hunting variant, while smaller specimens are generally considered harmless scavengers unless cornered.
