Overview

The NCR-Brotherhood War was a devastating conflict between the New California Republic and the Mojave chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel, fought from 2277 into the early 2280s over technology, ideology, and control of the Mojave Wasteland.

History & Background

The two powers were once friendly: the Brotherhood helped shape the NCR's early development and shared technology for a time. But as the NCR expanded eastward, it demanded the Brotherhood's technology and refused to tolerate a rival military force it could not control. The Brotherhood, bound by its charter to hoard pre-war tech, refused. Tensions erupted into open war when the NCR attacked Brotherhood positions across the Mojave.

Details & Timeline

2277: war breaks out; the NCR assaults Brotherhood bunkers and strongholds. 2277: the Battle of HELIOS One — Elder Elijah seizes the solar power plant and uses its array as a weapon, but the NCR eventually overruns the facility, a blow from which the Mojave chapter never recovers. 2277-2280: the NCR grinds down the Brotherhood, destroying most of its forces. By 2281 the Brotherhood is reduced to a handful of survivors hiding in the Hidden Valley bunker, debating desperate measures — including Elder Elijah's plan to detonate a warhead or the proposed orbital bombardment of the NCR. Veronica Santangelo's story documents the war's human cost.

Wasteland Significance

The war crippled both factions: the Brotherhood lost nearly everything in the Mojave, while the NCR spent lives and resources it could not spare, weakening its hold on the region before the Second Battle of Hoover Dam. The war also poisoned relations between the two powers for a generation and left the Mojave's fate hanging on the Courier's choices in 2281.
