Wendigo
Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 76
The Wendigo of post-war Appalachia is a horrifying fusion of Algonquian folklore and biological nightmare — a gaunt, elongated humanoid creature with skin stretched tight over an emaciated frame, disproportionately long limbs ending in razor-sharp claws, and a face frozen in an expression of eternal, ravenous hunger. Unlike many cryptids that are pre-war legends made flesh, the Wendigo appears to be a condition — something that happens to humans who resort to cannibalism in areas of concentrated radiation and FEV contamination.
The transformation from human to Wendigo is progressive and seemingly irreversible. Early-stage Wendigos retain some human cognition but are consumed by insatiable hunger, their bodies elongating and distorting as the condition progresses. Late-stage Wendigos are entirely feral, moved only by the drive to feed. They are fast — unnervingly so — capable of closing distance in seconds with a loping, distorted gait, and their claws can tear through combat armor with minimal effort. Wendigos are also capable of mimicking human speech, often luring victims by calling for help in the voices of previous victims.
The Wendigo condition appears specific to the Appalachian region, suggesting environmental co-factors (possibly the unique FEV strains present in the area, or specific radiation signatures from the mining and industrial contamination) are required for the transformation. In pre-war Algonquian lore, the Wendigo was a spiritual curse associated with cannibalism and winter starvation; the post-war biological manifestation represents a grim literalization of those warnings. Gourmands — a group of cannibalistic gourmets operating in the Appalachian wastes — actively seek out Wendigos, viewing them as the ultimate expression of the cannibal's art, though most of these encounters end with the Gourmands becoming meals themselves.
