Bloodbug
Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 4, Fallout 76
Bloodbugs are mutated mosquitoes of terrifying proportions, with leg spans exceeding two feet and proboscises sharp enough to pierce combat armor. Emerging in the Commonwealth and surrounding regions following the Great War, these insects represent a dramatic escalation of their pre-war ancestors' blood-feeding behavior. They are particularly prevalent in marshy, swampy areas and anywhere standing water can be found.
A bloodbug's primary attack involves its elongated proboscis, which it uses to impale prey and drain blood directly from the circulatory system. This feeding behavior is not merely predatory — bloodbugs can rapidly exsanguinate a human-sized target, leaving them weakened, anemic, and vulnerable to secondary attack. Their aerial agility and erratic flight patterns make them difficult to hit with conventional firearms at close range.
Bloodbug proboscises are valued by wasteland apothecaries and surgeons for their combination of strength and hollow-tube precision, sometimes being repurposed into medical equipment or improvised melee weapons. Bloodbug meat is toxic if consumed raw due to anticoagulant compounds, but can be rendered safe through thorough cooking. Particularly large specimens, known as Vampiric Bloodbugs, exhibit increased aggression and engorgement, suggesting they have recently fed.
