The Expedition to the Sierra Madre
Events & Timeline · Source: Fallout: New Vegas — Dead Money (Sierra Madre Casino Holotapes & Terminal Records)
Overview
The Expedition to the Sierra Madre, occurring in 2281, was a forced mission undertaken by the Courier at the behest of Father Elijah, a rogue Brotherhood of Steel Elder who had discovered the legendary Sierra Madre Casino & Resort in the depths of the Mojave. The Courier, along with three other captives fitted with explosive collars, was coerced into assembling a team and breaching the casino's near-impenetrable security systems to access its fabled vault.
History & Background
The Sierra Madre opened its doors on October 22, 2077 — one day before the Great War — as the most exclusive casino ever conceived, funded by Frederick Sinclair. Sinclair spared no expense, incorporating experimental holographic security, indestructible vending machines capable of matter reconstitution, and a vault containing a fortune in gold bars. When the bombs fell, the casino's automated systems sealed it tight, preserving its deadly defenses — including the toxic red Cloud and Ghost People — for over two centuries. Father Elijah, a known techno-fascist within the Brotherhood of Steel, became obsessed with the Sierra Madre during his exile in the Big MT, learning of its secrets from the Think Tank.
Details & Timeline
In 2281, the Courier was ambushed at the abandoned Brotherhood of Steel bunker near Cottonwood Cove and transported to the Villa — the town surrounding the casino. The Courier was fitted with an explosive slave collar by Elijah and forced to recruit three other collared captives: Dean Domino (a pre-War lounge singer with a grudge against Sinclair), Dog/God (a Nightkin with split personality disorder), and Christine Royce (a mute Brotherhood Scribe hunting Elijah). Together they breached the casino's defenses, navigating the Cloud, Ghost People, and holographic emitters. The Courier ultimately confronted Elijah in the vault, where the Elder planned to use the casino's technology — the Cloud, the holograms, and the vending machines — to scour the Mojave clean and rebuild civilization in his image.
Wasteland Significance
The Sierra Madre expedition demonstrated the true danger of one person with pre-War technology and the will to use it. Had Elijah's plan succeeded, the Cloud could have dispersed across the Mojave, wiping out all life between the casino and the Hoover Dam. The event also marked the end of the Sierra Madre's 200-year isolation, the destruction of one of the last untouched pre-War sanctuaries, and the collection (or leaving) of 37 gold bars that became the subject of countless wasteland legends. The Sierra Madre vending machines represent perhaps the most significant lost technology in the series — true matter conversion.
