The Siege of Navarro
Events & Timeline · Source: Fallout 2 (Navarro Base location) & Fallout: New Vegas (Arcade Gannon companion dialogue, For Auld Lang Syne quest)
Overview
The Siege of Navarro, occurring in 2242, was the climactic military assault by the New California Republic on the last major Enclave stronghold on the American West Coast. Following the destruction of the Poseidon Oil Rig, the Enclave's surviving leadership consolidated at Navarro, a heavily fortified pre-War military base on the California coast that had served as the Enclave's mainland staging ground since before the Great War.
History & Background
Navarro began as a clandestine Enclave outpost in 2220, established to facilitate surface operations and the acquisition of resources. Staffed by Enclave soldiers and scientists, the base was responsible for coordinating mainland activities including the creation of intelligent Deathclaws and the survey of Vault 13. After the destruction of the Oil Rig by the Chosen One in 2242, surviving Enclave personnel — including members of the presidential detail and scientific corps — retreated to Navarro, making it the faction's de facto headquarters. The NCR, having been tipped off about the Enclave's presence by the Chosen One, mobilized a large military force to eliminate the threat once and for all.
Details & Timeline
The siege itself was a brutal, multi-phase engagement. NCR Rangers and mechanized infantry surrounded the base, cutting off supply lines and escape routes. The Enclave defenders, demoralized after the Oil Rig's destruction but still possessing superior weapons and power armor, mounted a desperate defense. The battle lasted several days and was characterized by heavy casualties on both sides. Eventually, NCR forces breached the perimeter and overran the facility. Many Enclave personnel were killed in the fighting; others scattered into the wasteland, becoming the wandering remnants that would later form the basis of the East Coast Enclave and the Mojave chapter.
Wasteland Significance
The Siege of Navarro effectively ended the Enclave as a cohesive force on the West Coast. Surviving Enclave members fled east, eventually establishing the Raven Rock base in the Capital Wasteland under Colonel Autumn and the AI President John Henry Eden. The NCR's victory cemented their position as the dominant military power in post-War California and was heavily propagandized. The battle also resulted in the capture and reverse-engineering of Vertibird technology by the NCR — access to which is occasionally granted to the Courier in Fallout: New Vegas as 'Bear Force One.'
Notable Appearances
Referenced extensively in Fallout 2 (the base itself appears as a location the Chosen One can infiltrate) and Fallout: New Vegas — Arcade Gannon survives the siege as a child, and the NCR's Vertibird fleet originates from captured Navarro assets. Dialogue with Arcade and Enclave Remnants in New Vegas provides eyewitness accounts.
