Fog Crawler
Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 4: Far Harbor
Fog crawlers are enormous mutated crustacean-arthropod hybrids that stalk the radioactive fog of Mount Desert Island, Maine. Standing eight to twelve feet tall on multiple segmented legs, fog crawlers are considered by many wasteland survival guides to be among the most dangerous non-legendary creatures on the Eastern Seaboard. Their name derives from both their preferred habitat — the dense, mutagenic fog banks that blanket The Island — and their skittering, many-legged locomotion.
A fog crawler's body plan defies easy categorization: it possesses the segmented, multi-limbed structure of an arthropod combined with a fleshy, almost mollusk-like torso, crowned with a bulbous head featuring multiple independently-moving eyestalks. This chimeric physiology is likely the result of the concentrated mutagenic compounds present in The Island's unique fog, which accelerates and distorts the mutation process beyond typical wasteland norms. Their primary attack involves rapid strikes with their oversized clawed forelimbs, backed by lunging bites from their surprisingly mobile head structure.
Fog crawlers possess formidable regenerative capabilities — wounds that would be fatal to most creatures close within minutes, allowing them to outlast prey through sheer attrition. Their carapace, while not as thick as a mirelurk shell, is supplemented by this regeneration to create a creature that is exceptionally difficult to permanently injure. Fog crawler tissue samples are of great interest to wasteland researchers studying accelerated cellular regeneration, though the practical difficulties of obtaining viable samples have limited progress. Limited evidence suggests fog crawlers may have spread beyond The Island's fog banks to other coastal regions with similar environmental conditions.
