Mothman

The Mothman is perhaps the most famous cryptid of pre-war American folklore, associated with the Point Pleasant, West Virginia area and famously linked (in folklore) as a harbinger of the 1967 Silver Bridge collapse. In the post-war Appalachian wasteland, the Mothman is no longer a matter of folklore — it is a documented, if rare, biological reality that has become woven into the spiritual beliefs of Appalachian survivor communities.

The post-war Mothman bears a strong resemblance to its pre-war descriptions: a roughly humanoid figure standing six to seven feet tall, with large, moth-like wings spanning ten to twelve feet, glowing red eyes, and a body covered in dark, chitinous material that absorbs light. The creature is capable of powered flight and demonstrates remarkable agility in the air. Its eyes emit a distinctive red bioluminescence, and its presence is often preceded by a low-frequency humming or thrumming sound.

Unlike many wasteland creatures, the Mothman is not universally hostile. Some encounters describe the creature observing silently from a distance before departing; others report hostile attacks using sonic blasts, wing buffets, and claw strikes. The Wise Mothman variant — encountered at the culmination of certain spiritual rituals in Appalachia — is entirely non-hostile and may even provide a form of temporary enlightenment or enhanced perception to those who approach it with proper reverence.

The origin of the Mothman is debated: some evidence points to pre-war FEV or genetic experimentation, possibly at West-Tek or a related facility; others suggest the creature predates human civilization entirely, merely emerging after the Great War removed human suppression. The Mothman Cult, active in post-war Appalachia, reveres the creature as a divine messenger or embodiment of a higher power, maintaining shrines and conducting rituals to attract its attention.
