Scorchbeast

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 76

The Scorchbeast is the apex predator of the Appalachian wasteland — a gargantuan mutated bat of truly terrifying proportions. With wingspans exceeding fifty feet and bodies the size of pre-war military aircraft, scorchbeasts dominate the skies of West Virginia and represent one of the most dangerous single-creature threats in the known post-war world. Their name derives from both their scorched-earth hunting tactics and their devastating sonic attack capability.

A scorchbeast's anatomy is dominated by its massive wings, powerful enough to generate hurricane-force downdrafts when the creature flies low. Its body is covered in a leathery hide over dense, radiation-hardened muscle tissue, and its head is crowned with a prominent nasal crest that functions as both a sensory organ and a sonic resonator. From this crest, scorchbeasts emit their signature attack: a focused sonic blast that can pulverize concrete, rupture internal organs, and render hearing permanently damaged in surviving targets at close range.

In addition to their sonic blast, scorchbeasts utilize a devastating radioactive breath weapon — a concentrated stream of radiological energy projected from their maw that causes both immediate thermal damage and persistent radiation sickness. Their physical attacks, while less commonly employed than their ranged capabilities, are no less lethal: a scorchbeast can seize and carry away a fully-grown human in each foot, and their bite force is sufficient to crush power armor.

Scorchbeasts are believed to have originated from the bat populations of the Appalachian cave systems, mutated by the region's unique combination of radiation, industrial pollutants, and possibly FEV or other pre-war biological agents. They are closely associated with the Scorched Plague — a fungal-like infection that transforms humans and other creatures into hive-minded drones serving the scorchbeasts' collective will. The scorchbeast queen, larger still than standard specimens, serves as the reproductive nexus for the species and the primary target for any serious scorchbeast eradication effort. The Responders, Fire Breathers, and Brotherhood of Steel Appalachian chapter all mounted operations against scorchbeast populations, with varying degrees of success.
