The Master's Defeat
Events & Timeline · Source: Fallout (1997), endgame events and ending slides
Overview
The Master's Defeat was the destruction of the Master and his Unity by the Vault Dweller of Vault 13 in 2162, ending the greatest existential threat the early wasteland had ever faced and clearing the way for civilization's rebirth.
History & Background
The Master — once the pre-war scientist Richard Grey — transformed himself with the Forced Evolutionary Virus at Mariposa in 2102 and spent decades building an army of super mutants. His Unity sought to 'perfect' humanity by converting all survivors into super mutants. By 2161 his forces were raiding settlements across Southern California, stealing a water chip from Vault 13 and setting the Vault Dweller's quest in motion.
Details & Timeline
2161: the Vault Dweller leaves Vault 13 to find a replacement water chip, tracing the trail from the raiders to the mutant army and finally to its source. 2162: the Vault Dweller infiltrates the Cathedral in Los Angeles, confronts the Master, and either persuades him of his plan's fatal flaw or destroys him in battle. The Mariposa Military Base is detonated, annihilating the mutant production line. The Vault Dweller returns to Vault 13 only to be exiled, founding the village of Arroyo in the process.
Wasteland Significance
The Unity's defeat removed the super mutant horde that had terrorized the region and allowed the communities of the wasteland — Shady Sands, the Hub, the Boneyard — to grow into the New California Republic. The Vault Dweller's exile became the seed of Arroyo, and his legend inspired generations of wastelanders.
