Zetans — colloquially known as 'aliens' — are an extraterrestrial species that has been visiting Earth for centuries prior to the Great War and continues to operate in the post-apocalyptic period. Physically, Zetans conform to the classic 'Grey' archetype of 20th-century UFO lore: short stature (approximately three to four feet tall), grayish skin, disproportionately large heads dominated by oversized black eyes, slender limbs with three-fingered hands, and a complete absence of visible external ears or nose.

Zetan technology is centuries or millennia ahead of pre-war human capability. Their spacecraft demonstrate faster-than-light travel, anti-gravity propulsion, and energy-based weaponry including disintegrator rays, stun batons, and personal force fields. They have established at least one orbital platform — the Mothership Zeta — which has been in Earth orbit since at least the pre-war period, possibly for much longer. Zetans routinely abduct humans for experimentation, genetic sampling, and — in some cases — long-term captivity.

Zetan activity increased notably following the Great War, possibly because the nuclear exchange removed humanity's ability to effectively monitor or contest their operations. Alien crash sites have been documented in the Capital Wasteland, the Mojave Desert, and Appalachia, among other locations. Zetans have demonstrated interest in pre-war military technology, particularly nuclear weapons, and may have been monitoring human technological development for centuries. Their ultimate objectives remain unknown — observation, resource extraction, genetic sampling, and a possible long-term colonization or integration plan are all suggested by available evidence.

The Mothership Zeta incident of 2277, in which a human abductee led a revolt that resulted in significant damage to the Zetan command structure and the death of at least one Zetan captain, represents the most significant documented human-alien conflict. The long-term consequences of this incident for Zetan operations on Earth are unknown.
