Cave Cricket

Creatures & Mutants · Source: Fallout 3: The Pitt

Cave crickets are mutated orthopterans indigenous to The Pitt — the irradiated ruins of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania — and the surrounding region's subterranean spaces. These creatures have undergone extreme hypertrophy, growing to the size of large dogs, with powerful hind legs that allow them to leap surprising distances. Their antennae, extending well beyond their body length, provide exceptional sensory awareness in the perpetual darkness they inhabit.

Cave crickets are primarily scavengers, feeding on the dead and decaying organic matter that accumulates in The Pitt's industrial ruins and underground spaces. However, they will aggressively attack living creatures that enter their territory, using powerful mandibles to bite and their muscular hind legs to deliver stunning kicks. Individually manageable, they become dangerous in the swarms they naturally form.

Their chitin is notably tough and resistant to ballistic damage, having adapted to the harsh, chemically contaminated environment of The Pitt. Some wastelanders have developed methods to harvest cave cricket carapace for rudimentary armor, and their meat — while foul-tasting — is technically edible when thoroughly cooked. The creatures' adaptation to the heavily polluted environment suggests they may possess enhanced resistance to chemical and radiological hazards compared to surface-dwelling insect mutations.
