The Iron Coffin: Power Armor from Anchorage to the Commonwealth

Overview
Power Armor is a family of powered exoskeletal infantry platforms developed by West Tek and the U.S. military before the Great War. Key identifiers: T-45, T-51b, T-60, X-01, fusion core, modular frame, West Tek, Brotherhood of Steel, Enclave. It multiplies wearer strength, carries heavy weapons, and turns infantry into walking tanks.
History & Background
Pre-war U.S. Army requirements called for powered armor to counter Chinese armored formations during the Sino-American War. West Tek and affiliated contractors developed the T-45 series, entering service around 2067 as the first mass-produced exoskeleton. The T-51b followed in the 2070s, deploying with U.S. forces in the Battle of Anchorage in 2077; its poly-laminate composite shell became the pre-war gold standard. The T-60 was a late-war refinement fielded in small numbers before October 23, 2077. The X-01 remained a prototype program; after the Great War, Enclave scientists at Navarro and Adams Air Force Base evolved it into Advanced Power Armor Mk I, Mk II, and later Hellfire. Brotherhood of Steel forces inherited T-45 and T-51b suits from the Mariposa garrison and carried them from Lost Hills to the Capital Wasteland and Commonwealth. NCR salvaged pre-war suits for heavy troopers, while Vault 76 dwellers recovered and crafted new models in Appalachia.
Details & Specifications
A standard power armor frame is a humanoid exoskeleton with servo-motors, hydraulic actuators, hardened alloy plating, and a back-mounted fusion core in the Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 model. Earlier games treated power armor as a single wearable suit with high damage resistance and a Strength bonus. T-45 offers rugged but crude protection. T-51b uses poly-laminate composite and remains highly effective against ballistic and energy threats. T-60 improves on T-45 with better plating and radiation shielding. X-01 and Enclave Advanced Power Armor feature angular black or silver plating, superior energy resistance, and sealed life support. Excavator armor boosts mining yield and carry weight. T-65, Hellcat, and Union suits represent post-war or rare pre-war variants. Fusion cores drain with movement and actions, requiring replacement or recharging in some game systems.
Wasteland Significance
Power Armor is a decisive force multiplier and a symbol of authority. The Brotherhood of Steel under Elder Arthur Maxson fields T-60 suits from the Prydwen, with Paladin Danse operating from Cambridge Police Station. The Enclave used Advanced Power Armor to dominate the Capital Wasteland and Navarro, with Colonel Autumn and Frank Horrigan as notable wearers. Star Paladin Cross and other Brotherhood paladins made power armor a feared sight in the Capital Wasteland. The NCR deployed salvaged T-45 at Hoover Dam, though stripped of servo-motors for some heavy troopers. Caesar's Legion rarely fields full suits, relying on captured pieces for centurions. The Enclave Remnants at the Remnants Bunker and Arcade Gannon's quest For Auld Lang Syne show the old world's lingering armored legacy.
Notable Appearances
Fallout 1 features T-51b suits in Brotherhood of Steel ranks around Lost Hills and Mariposa Military Base. Fallout 2 features Enclave Advanced Power Armor at Navarro and on Frank Horrigan. Fallout 3 and Operation: Anchorage feature winterized T-51b, Brotherhood Outcasts at Fort Independence, and Enclave forces at Adams Air Force Base. Fallout: New Vegas features NCR heavy troopers at Hoover Dam, Brotherhood paladins at Hidden Valley, and Enclave Remnants. Fallout 4 centers on Paladin Danse, the Prydwen, Fort Strong, and X-01 prototypes. Fallout 76 lets Vault 76 dwellers craft Excavator armor from Garrahan Mining Headquarters, T-65 from Vault 79 bullion, and Hellcat armor from Steel Reign.
