Power Armor: The T-51b Bulwark and the Walking Tanks of the Great War
Weapons & Gear · Source: Brotherhood of Steel Scribe Entry 2287.4 — 'Power Armor: A Technical Overview'
Overview
Power armor is a pre-War military exoskeleton platform that transforms a soldier into a walking tank. Identifiers: T-45d, T-51b, T-60, X-01/Advanced Power Armor, fusion core, West Tek, Brotherhood of Steel, Enclave. RobCo terminal note: unauthorized access to armored chassis without servo-training results in fatal orthopedic compression.
History & Background
Development began before the Anchorage Campaign as the U.S. military sought infantry survivability against Chinese armored and biochemical threats. West Tek and allied contractors produced the T-45d, first deployed in 2067; it was rugged but suffered hydraulic and radiation-shielding deficits. The T-51b entered service by 2076-2077, featuring a poly-laminate chromium-titanium shell and microfusion power plant, and proved decisive in the Anchorage Reclamation. Late-war T-60 suits were produced in limited numbers, while the X-01 prototype and Enclave Advanced Power Armor Mk II evolved into post-War Enclave standard. After the Great War of October 23, 2077, power armor became the defining relic of the old world: the Brotherhood of Steel, founded by Roger Maxson at Mariposa Military Base, built its martial identity around it, while the Enclave refined it at Navarro and the NCR later stripped T-45d suits for Heavy Troopers.
Details & Specifications
A power armor suit consists of a servo-assisted frame, armored plates, environmental sealing, and a power source. T-45d: early hydraulic suit, moderate ballistic protection, poor radiation shielding. T-51b: chromium-titanium alloy and poly-laminate shell, microfusion-cell power, recoil compensation, NBC sealing, and strength amplification; it can withstand small-arms fire and light energy weapons. T-60: late pre-War limited-production model, thicker plating, improved servo response. X-01/APA Mk II: Enclave-grade composite armor, high radiation resistance, advanced targeting and life support, often black and angular. Fallout 4 and 76 standardize the frame-and-fusion-core system: cores drain during use, and suits require repair. Variants include Raider power armor (scavenged and unsealed), Excavator armor (Garrahan Mining, +100 carry weight), T-65 (Vault 79 gold bullion), Hellfire (Enclave, Broken Steel), Union and Hellcat (Fallout 76 expeditions/Steel Reign). Strength enhancement permits use of heavy weapons such as miniguns and gatling lasers.
Wasteland Significance
Power armor is the wasteland's most recognizable force multiplier. The Brotherhood of Steel treats it as sacred technology; Paladin Danse and the Prydwen's knights use T-60 suits to project power in the Commonwealth, while Elder McNamara's Hidden Valley chapter hoards suits in the Mojave. The Enclave's Advanced Power Armor allowed it to challenge the Brotherhood and NCR, and Frank Horrigan's custom suit made him a near-unstoppable enforcer. The NCR's salvaged T-45d Heavy Troopers at Hoover Dam demonstrate a pragmatic, less mystical approach. In Appalachia, Vault 76 dwellers can craft Excavator, T-65, Hellcat, and Union suits, turning pre-War military hardware into settlement defense and mining utility. Control of power armor often determines control of ruins, roads, and battles.
