Overview

The Cryolator is a prototype cryogenic weapon that freezes targets solid with jets of supercooled liquid. It is one of the rarest weapons in the Commonwealth, locked away since before the war.

History & Development

The Cryolator was developed pre-war as an experimental crowd-control and cryopreservation tool, with prototypes stored in select facilities. One was secured in Vault 111's overseer's office, where it remained sealed for over two centuries. Its cryo technology shares ancestry with the vault's own cryogenic systems.

Technical Specifications

The weapon expels liquid nitrogen from a reservoir, freezing enemies and slowing them dramatically. Frozen targets take bonus damage from follow-up shots. It consumes cryo cells, which are rare, and can be modified to launch freezing grenades.

Wasteland Usage & Variants

The Sole Survivor can retrieve the Vault 111 Cryolator by picking the master lock or sending a companion to fetch it. Its freezing effect makes it invaluable against tough enemies, and the Cryolator remains a fan favorite. Cryo weaponry later spread to other wastelands in limited numbers.

Notable Appearances

The Cryolator appears in Fallout 4, famously sealed in a display case during the game's opening hours at Vault 111.
