Holotape
Technology & Robotics · Source: All Fallout games
Overview
The holotape is the pre-war world's standard data storage medium: a durable magnetic tape cartridge readable by Pip-Boys, terminals, and dedicated players. It is the primary way wastelanders preserve and share information.
History & Development
Holotapes were ubiquitous in pre-war America, used for music, personal logs, corporate records, and software distribution. Their rugged construction allowed millions to survive the war intact. Post-war, they became the backbone of oral history, quest documentation, and wasteland journalism.
Technical Specifications
A holotape stores audio and data on a sealed magnetic medium inside a hard plastic shell, readable by most pre-war electronics. Capacity is modest by modern standards but sufficient for voice logs and small files. They are remarkably resistant to radiation and decay.
Wasteland Usage & Variants
Wastelanders record diaries, warnings, and confessions on holotapes, while quests frequently hinge on finding or playing them. Radio stations and museums curate pre-war holotape music. Variants include data tapes, training tapes, and military-issue recording tapes.
Notable Appearances
Holotapes appear in every Fallout game, with iconic examples like the Vault 111 entry recordings, the Silver Shroud serials, and countless survivor logs across the wastes.
