Far Harbor (The Island)
Locations & Ruins · Source: Fallout 4 add-on Far Harbor (2016), Bethesda Game Studios — in-game world, terminals, and dialogue
Overview
Far Harbor is a fishing town on the fog-shrouded Island, a post-war name for Mount Desert Island, Maine, and the setting of the Fallout 4 add-on of the same name. It is the largest settlement of its region, caught between the zealotry of the Children of Atom, the isolationist synths of Acadia, and the hostile wildlife of the fog.
History & Background
The Island was settled after the war by fishermen and sailors, and the town of Far Harbor grew around its docks and the Last Plank bar. The Children of Atom established a fortress called the Nucleus around a crashed submarine, while the synth community of Acadia formed in a mountaintop retreat seeking refuge from the Institute. The islanders live under the constant threat of the deadly radioactive fog and its mutated inhabitants.
Geography & Layout
The Island is dominated by dense pine forest, rocky coasts, and a persistent radioactive fog that rolls across the lowlands. Settlements cling to the coast, while the interior hides trapper camps, ghoul-infested ruins, and landmarks like the Vim! bottling plant and the pre-war soda it produced.
Wasteland Significance
Far Harbor is widely praised as one of the best Fallout add-ons, exploring themes of faith, identity, and coexistence between humans, synths, and zealots, and it offers genuinely branching faction choices.
