Diamond City, often referred to as "The Great Green Jewel of the Commonwealth," is a prominent settlement in the post-apocalyptic world of Fallout 4, built within the ruins of Boston's historic Fenway Park. It serves as the largest and most organized hub in the Commonwealth, offering a relatively safe haven for survivors, merchants, and travelers amidst the dangers of the wasteland. The city's unique baseball-themed culture is evident in its architecture, the gear worn by its security guards, and even the names of some of its inhabitants and establishments.
Founded in the 2130s, Diamond City quickly grew in size and importance. Its early history includes a significant event in 2180 when the Commonwealth Minutemen rose to prominence by successfully defending the city from a Super Mutant horde, solidifying their reputation as protectors of the region. However, the city's sense of security was shaken in 2229 by the "Broken Mask Incident," where a seemingly ordinary man was revealed to be a Synth, leading to widespread paranoia and fear of the Institute and its synthetic creations throughout the Commonwealth.
By 2282, under the leadership of Mayor McDonough, Diamond City enacted a controversial decree to expel all ghouls from the city, forcing many to establish the nearby settlement of Goodneighbor. This event further highlighted the social tensions and prejudices prevalent within the city, which also saw a degree of social segregation where wealthier residents occupied the upper stands of the stadium. Despite its outward appearance as a thriving settlement, an underlying current of fear and distrust, particularly concerning Synths, persists among its inhabitants in 2287.
Diamond City remains a vital center for trade, information, and quests, with key figures like the journalist Piper Wright and the Protectron chef Takahashi contributing to its unique character. Its robust defenses, including the formidable "Green Monster" wall, make it a difficult target for external threats like Raiders or Gunners, who generally avoid direct conflict due to the city's strength and economic importance.
