Vault 75

Vaults & Shelters · Source: Fallout 4 (2015), Bethesda Game Studios — in-game world and terminal entries

Overview

Vault 75 was a secret genetic experiment hidden beneath Malden Middle School, featured in Fallout 4, designed to breed a generation of ideal humans through controlled reproduction and culling.

History & Background

Residents were required to reproduce at age 18, after which they were killed — their deaths recorded as transfers — while their children were raised and tested for superior traits. The program ran for decades until the adult population revolted and escaped, leaving the vault's terminals to document the atrocity. The Sole Survivor can explore the vault and recover its data for the factions of the Commonwealth.

Geography & Layout

The vault is concealed beneath the school's basement, its clean pre-war corridors contrasting with the grim laboratories, the nursery, and the dormitory where children were conditioned.

Wasteland Significance

Vault 75 is one of the darkest social experiments in the series, illustrating Vault-Tec's eugenic ambitions, and its discovery is a memorable piece of Fallout 4's environmental storytelling.
