The Capital Wasteland

Locations & Ruins · Source: Fallout 3 (2008), Bethesda Game Studios — in-game world, terminals, and dialogue

Overview

The Capital Wasteland is the post-nuclear remains of Washington, D.C., and its surrounding Maryland and Virginia suburbs, and the primary setting of Fallout 3. Once the seat of the United States government, the region absorbed a heavy concentration of nuclear strikes during the Great War and now lies in ruins. In 2277 it is a harsh frontier of crumbling monuments, metro tunnels, and desperate settlements.

History & Background

The nation's capital was a prime target on October 23, 2077, and the region absorbed dozens of warheads in the opening minutes of the war. Survivors clustered into settlements like Megaton, Rivet City, and the ghoul-infested ruins of the city proper. The Brotherhood of Steel established the Citadel in the ruins of the Pentagon and waged a covert war against the Enclave over Project Purity at the Jefferson Memorial. The region's future is ultimately decided by the Lone Wanderer during the events of Fallout 3.

Geography & Layout

The region is split between the rubble-choked, often flooded streets of downtown Washington, the suburban ruins of the Virginia and Maryland side, and open wasteland dotted with ruined towns, metro tunnels, and iconic landmarks such as the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. The Potomac River cuts through the center, spanned by a few broken bridges.

Wasteland Significance

The Capital Wasteland is one of the most iconic regions in the series, establishing the East Coast's character of irradiated ruins, scrappy settlements, and ideological warfare. It anchors the east-coast storylines of the Brotherhood of Steel, the Enclave, and the struggle to restore clean water to the wastes.
