Vault 101
Vaults & Shelters · Source: Fallout 3
Vault 101 is one of the Vault-Tec Corporation's underground fallout shelters located in the Capital Wasteland, specifically west of Springvale and northwest of Megaton. Constructed in the 2060s, its publicly stated purpose was to protect a select group of individuals from the Great War of 2077 and the subsequent nuclear fallout. However, like many Vaults, it served a darker, undisclosed purpose as a social experiment.
The true experiment of Vault 101 was to study the role of the Overseer in a community indefinitely isolated from the outside world, as the Vault was never intended to open. The inhabitants were kept in the dark about the true state of the wasteland, fed fake radio transmissions recorded before the war that depicted a far bleaker reality than even the actual post-apocalyptic world. The Overseer, a Vault-Tec operative, was tasked with maintaining this isolation, even possessing secret access to the outside world and communication capabilities.
Life in Vault 101 continued for over two centuries under strict isolationist doctrine, with the mantra "we are born in the Vault, we live in the Vault, and we die in the Vault" instilled in its residents. This isolation was briefly broken in 2258 when James, a scientist working on Project Purity, and his infant child (the future Lone Wanderer) were granted entry after James's wife died. This event marked a significant deviation from the Vault's intended perpetual closure. In 2277, James abruptly left the Vault to resume Project Purity, triggering a lockdown and a radroach infestation, which ultimately led to the Lone Wanderer's escape into the Capital Wasteland.
Following the Lone Wanderer's departure, Vault 101 descended into internal conflict, with factions emerging that either wished to maintain isolation or open the Vault to the outside world. The fate of Vault 101 and its residents can vary depending on the choices made by the Lone Wanderer during the quest "Trouble on the Homefront." The long-term isolation also raised concerns about genetic stagnation and inbreeding within the confined population.
