Overview
Vault 88 is an unfinished vault in the Commonwealth, featured in Fallout 4, which the Sole Survivor can complete and claim as a buildable settlement. It was designed to test social engineering and management theories.
History & Background
Vault 88's overseer intended to run experiments on how dwellers responded to different management styles and living conditions, but construction stalled and the vault was never finished. Its staff and first residents died in a toxic accident. The Sole Survivor can restore the vault's power, clear its tunnels, and even choose to run the overseer's social experiments on new settlers.
Geography & Layout
The vault's core is built, but large sections of tunnel remain unfinished, including a section collapsed beneath Quincy. Its workshop and water features make it a unique, fully customizable vault settlement.
Wasteland Significance
Vault 88 is the series' only player-constructible vault, combining Fallout 4's settlement system with classic vault storytelling.
