Oasis
Locations & Ruins · Source: Fallout 3 (2008), Bethesda Game Studios — in-game world, terminals, and dialogue; Harold's history from Fallout (1997) and Fallout 2 (1998)
Overview
Oasis is a hidden green paradise in the heart of the Capital Wasteland, featured in Fallout 3, centered on Harold — a mutated ghoul who has become a living tree. It is one of the few truly verdant places in the region.
History & Background
Harold, a survivor of the pre-war world who appeared in the earlier Fallout games, was infected with a mutagenic virus that slowly transformed him into a tree. The treeminders, a tribe of worshippers, tend to him and guard the grove, debating his future. The player can choose to let Harold grow, kill him, or use a special sap to stop his growth — one of the game's most philosophical choices.
Geography & Layout
The grove is a small, lush valley of green foliage, mossy rock, and clean water, hidden behind a rock formation and reachable only by a specific route through the wastes. Harold's immense rooted form dominates the center, with a cave network and his heart accessible beneath him.
Wasteland Significance
Oasis offers a rare glimpse of life and renewal in the wasteland, and its treatment of Harold — a beloved recurring character — is one of Fallout 3's most poignant moments.
Notable Appearances
Fallout 3 (2008); Harold previously appeared in Fallout and Fallout 2.
