Vault 114

Vaults & Shelters · Source: Fallout 4 (2015), Bethesda Game Studios — in-game world, terminals, and dialogue

Overview

Vault 114 is a partially built vault beneath Park Street station in Boston, featured in Fallout 4. It was intended as an experiment in class-based society for wealthy residents, but it never functioned as designed.

History & Background

The vault was populated with upper-class residents selected for a social experiment, but construction problems and the harsh realities of the post-war world doomed the plan. In 2287, the Sole Survivor is taken there by Kellogg, who murders their spouse; the vault later becomes the setting of the quest The Big Dig, where the Sole Survivor and Hancock's crew tunnel into its depths, which by then are claimed by raiders.

Geography & Layout

The vault is a half-finished concrete shell beneath the subway station, its corridors dark, flooded, and raider-claimed, with sections leading toward the Diamond City sewer system.

Wasteland Significance

Vault 114 bookends Fallout 4's beginning and one of its best side quests, and its class-based experiment adds another chapter to Vault-Tec's catalog of social engineering.
