Overview

Necropolis is the post-war ghoul city built in the ruins of Bakersfield, California, featured in Fallout. It grew from the survivors of Vault 12, whose doors never properly closed, leaving its inhabitants to be slowly transformed into ghouls.

History & Background

In October 2077, Vault 12's malfunctioning door failed to seal, exposing its residents to lethal radiation. The survivors who became ghouls founded Necropolis atop the ruins, building a functioning community that traded water from its underground reservoir. By 2161, super mutants from the Master's army attack the city, and the Vault Dweller's mission to secure a water chip leads through its dark streets.

Geography & Layout

Necropolis sprawls through the shattered remains of Bakersfield, with above-ground ruins, a dangerous sewer network, and a water processing plant at its heart. Both sentient and feral ghouls inhabit the area, and the mutant assault has pushed the city into chaos.

Wasteland Significance

Necropolis is one of the first ghoul societies in the series, establishing ghouls as a marginalized but complex people, and its fate in the endings of Fallout set the tone for the original game's consequential choices.
