The Glowing Sea

Locations & Ruins · Source: Fallout 4 (2015), Bethesda Game Studios — in-game world, terminals, and dialogue

Overview

The Glowing Sea is an enormous, intensely radioactive crater region southwest of Boston, featured in Fallout 4. It is the most irradiated area of the Commonwealth, created by a direct megaton-scale nuclear strike during the Great War.

History & Background

The region was the impact site of a massive warhead, leaving a deep crater and a permanently radioactive landscape. Over two centuries it became a wasteland within a wasteland, home to the Children of Atom, who revere the radiation and built a settlement called the Crater House near the impact site. The Sole Survivor must cross it to reach the Institute's hidden rail line and, later, the cave of the escaped scientist Virgil.

Geography & Layout

The Glowing Sea is a blasted expanse of radioactive dust, dead forests, and ruined buildings, centered on the enormous crater and the wreckage of a crashed pre-war aircraft. Its fog and storms of radiation make it deadly without power armor or heavy protection.

Wasteland Significance

The Glowing Sea demonstrates the lasting horror of nuclear war and hosts several notable quests and locations, including Sentinel Site Prescott and the Children of Atom's settlement.
